Central Russia,Vladimir's region, a small town Kolchugino, 1946. An orphanage for children who lost parents during the battle with the Nazis. My mother, a refugee from Odessa who worked as an educator among these adolescents. I am a nine-year boy, lived with her in a small room, previously served as a pantry.

Once, director of our orphanage comrade Remizov knocked on our door: "We have an event!  The ascendance sent us a little boy who saved our Red Army. Our troops reached Auschwitz- the camp of extermination of the Jews.e Germans began to evacuate the camp, but exhausted people fell. The Germans shoot down  them. The boy was knocked unconscious and the Germans thought he was already dead. The Germans left and the boy picked up by the Poles. They warm him, fed and delivered to our soldiers. Who knows, maybe these Poles feel their guilt, but maybe they acted from a sense of human compassion. But our soldiers immediately to adopt this child, but the command intervened and sent him to our orphanage. Since he is your nation, then you take he to your group. Take care of him like a son! He saw so much grief! But still he is a foreigner and we must show our humanity to the world "

Director left us, and in our family came Ernst Rosenstern. He was not tall, about fourteen. Army doctors amputated his frostbitten thumb on his left leg. The good gray eyes trustingly looked at us. Blonde hair made him look like a German, and ignorance of the Russian language has meant that small children of orphanage called him: "a fascist Borka". But after the explanations to my mother in this nickname was not a malice. Ernst gradually become accustomed to our family and told my mom his fate. My mother spoke German and French.

His family lived in Hamburg. His father was rich, and even had his car. When Ernest went into the regular German school, his father gave him a real Parker pen with gold nib. His father and mother saw themselves as Germans. Therefore they did not pay any attention to the posters that were hung in the streets:

"Jews-are an undesirable element in Germany. We ask the Jews to leave Germany. We understand that the Jews who betrayed their God, their religion, their ancestors and swear loyalty to us is revolting people and betray us to those who pay them! "

Policy analysts whispering to my father: "What are these posters? He wants the union with the West against the Russian Union and only! "

My father forbade me to read these posters and sincerely hated the Jews,  called to leave Germany. He broke off relations with his brother, who emigrated to America. Not every German was so fond of Germany, German culture, like my father. Only then, when we were in the coach for the cattle and we were taken to Auschwitz, he told me the address of his brother in Los Angeles.

In Auschwitz we shared more of my parents, I have not seen them. I worked in a team that unloaded the bodies from the chambers of the shower and transported them to the crematorium ovens.

The report of Ernst's uncle in Los Angeles prompted her mother to the idea to write letter to american uncle. Ernst's uncle responded! Ernst had not Soviet citizenship, therefore the director of the orphanage went to Moscow for permission to go to Ernst's uncle.  Then there was not "Iron Curtain and the Cold War" else. The permission was granted. The parting is not passed without tears. Everybody was crying, even the director of an orphanage, an old soldier weeped too!

Several letters came from Ernst to us in the winter, snow-covered town. After a warm meeting in sunny California Ernst looked around and realized that his father has the American followers, who learned nothing from the Holocaust. The naive or venality led these people? One way or another, but they are dangerous for society, dangerous to their children and grandchildren. The ashes of the Holocaust should always obligingly knocking on our hearts!

I remembered the fate of Ernst, when I read the note about the  opinion of American journalist Daniel Pearl's father. Daniel Pearl was killed by fundamentalists: "My son was killed by good people. They just do not look into the eyes of Daniel and did not understand that he loves them, sympathizes with them. "

No, Daniel was killed not people, but evil fanatics who do not understand any words. They only understand a force! They will disappear only when the place of naivete takes universal hatred for them, when people  will realize that  the human rights can not be spread at fanatics. Their place in mental institutions ..
