Dear friends ,
As we approach Rosh Hashanah, the "head" of the year, I would like to share with you a beautiful insight on the reason why we traditionally eat apples dipped in honey.
Apples, like many other fruits, grow naturally sweet on their trees. Honey, however, is produced by bees, creatures that are also known for their painful sting.
The apple and the honey each represent a different kind of happiness. The sweetness that we experience during good times, is naturally pleasant and enjoyable. This is similar to the apple which is sweet by nature.
There is another happiness that we experience when we overcome challenges through toil and hard work. It's not always easy and sometimes painful, but in the end we feel a special sense of accomplishment and triumph. This is like the honey, which can come with a sting, but is nonetheless sweeter than even the apple!
I would like to offer my blessings that the year should be naturally sweet like the apple. If, G-d forbid, there are any challenges in our lives, may they be transformed into even greater sweetness like honey.
